If you're nervous about this

Every dental site says they understand. Here's what we actually do.

"We offer sedation" isn't an answer, and most people who are frightened of the dentist have worked that out. So these are five specific things, and you can hold us to any of them.

01

We agree a stop signal first

Before anything starts, we agree that you raising your left hand means everything stops immediately. Not "in a second". Immediately. It works because we've practiced it, and because we mean it.

02

Nobody comments on how long it's been

Five years, fifteen, since you were a teenager. It doesn't get mentioned, ever. We're interested in what happens next. Shame is the reason people wait another year, and we're not adding to it.

03

You get the price before the drill

Nothing gets started until you've seen the number and said yes. If we find something mid-appointment, we stop, tell you what it costs, and you decide, including deciding to leave it for now.

04

You can come and just look

Book a ten-minute visit to see the room, meet whoever would treat you, and leave. No exam, no chair, no charge. About one person a week does this and we're always glad they did.

05

Plain words, and we check in

You'll hear "the back tooth on the bottom left", not a number and a letter. During anything longer than a filling we stop every few minutes to ask how you're doing, out loud, so you don't have to work out how to interrupt. And yes, sedation is available if you want it. It's just not the whole answer.

If an office treats your anxiety as an inconvenience, that's your answer about the office. It shouldn't take courage to book a cleaning.

Treatments & prices

What things cost, with insurance and without.

Not knowing the number is part of what makes this stressful. These are our actual prices. The insured column assumes a typical PPO after your deductible.

Cleaning & exam

Full exam, X-rays if you're due, hygienist clean, and a written plan if anything needs doing.

With insurance$0–$40
Without$189

Filling

Tooth-colored composite, one surface. Numbing included, and we wait until you're properly numb rather than nearly numb.

With insurance$45–$110
Without$225–$340

Crown

Porcelain, two visits, temporary in between. Milled locally so the fit gets checked properly.

With insurance$480–$720
Without$1,150–$1,490

Root canal

Front teeth in one visit, molars usually two. Not the experience it was twenty years ago, whatever you've heard about them.

With insurance$260–$540
Without$780–$1,320

Extraction

Simple extractions here; anything surgical or impacted we refer to an oral surgeon we trust.

With insurance$40–$120
Without$195–$390

Whitening

Custom trays and gel to take home. We'll tell you straight if your teeth won't shift much. Some don't.

With insuranceNot covered
Without$310

Emergencies get seen the same day wherever we possibly can. Call before 10am and we'll find you a gap. If you're in pain, don't wait to see whether it settles down.

Who you'll actually meet

Four people, and they've mostly been here a while.

Dr. Nadia Okafor, dentist
Dr. Nadia Okafor
Dentist · owner

Opened the practice in 2006. Does most of the nervous-patient appointments because she's the slowest, which she says is a compliment.

Dr. Sam Whitfield, dentist
Dr. Sam Whitfield
Dentist

Joined in 2019. Handles most of the crowns and root canals. Coaches his daughter's soccer team and will tell you about it.

Renata Alvarez, hygienist
Renata Alvarez
Hygienist

Fourteen years here. If you've had a cleaning at Bright Harbor, it was probably Renata, and she remembers your kids' names.

Joanne Pryce, practice manager

Practice manager

The one who fights your insurance company. Ask her about coverage before you worry about it. She's usually right.

From our patients

Rachel hadn't seen a dentist in eleven years.

★★★★★
"I hadn't been to a dentist in eleven years because I was embarrassed. Dr. Okafor didn't mention it once. Not once. I cried in the car afterwards, in a good way, and I've been back twice since."
Rachel T. · Toledo · new patient
★★★★★
"Took my seven-year-old who was terrified. They let her sit in the chair and press the buttons for five minutes before anyone looked in her mouth. She now asks when she's going back, which is insane to me."
Marcus D. · Sylvania · family patient
★★★★☆
"The dentistry is genuinely excellent and the crown fits perfectly. Getting through on the phone at 8am is another matter. Book online and save yourself the trouble. That's my only complaint in three years."
Elaine K. · Ottawa Hills · crown
Insurance & paying

We take most PPO plans, and we'll check yours before you come in.

Send us your plan details when you book and Joanne will tell you what's covered before your appointment, not after it. That's the part most practices get wrong.

  • No insurance? Our in-house plan is $29/month and covers two cleanings, exams and X-rays, plus 20% off everything else
  • Payment plans through a third-party lender for anything over $600, and we don't mark up the terms
  • We'll tell you if a treatment can safely wait until your benefits reset in January
  • ❌ We are not in-network for HMO or Medicaid plans, and we'd rather say so here than waste your afternoon

Five questions, about a minute.

We'll confirm by text with a time. If you'd rather speak to someone, the phone works too, but you never have to.

No card, no deposit. Booking costs nothing and cancelling is a text. New patients get a longer first visit. 45 minutes, so nothing is rushed. In pain today? Call instead. We hold same-day gaps for emergencies.

We'll text you back with a time. Nobody will call you unless you ask.

Thanks, that's in.

This is a demo form, so nothing was actually sent. On a live site this would reach the practice straight away and text you back with a time.

You might be wondering

There's no silly question on this list.

It's been years. Are you going to lecture me?
No. It's the question we get asked most and the answer never changes. We don't know what happened in your life for the last however-many years and it isn't our business. We'll look at what's there now, tell you what needs doing and in what order, and let you decide the pace. Plenty of people start with just a cleaning and come back for the rest later.
How much will it hurt?
A cleaning shouldn't hurt at all, though it can be uncomfortable if your gums are inflamed. Tell us and we'll go gentler or numb the area. For fillings and anything deeper you'll be properly numb before we start, and we wait and test rather than assuming. The honest answer about soreness afterwards is: a filling, usually nothing; an extraction or root canal, a day or two of ache that ibuprofen handles.
Do you see children?
Yes, from about age three. First visits are mostly a ride in the chair, counting teeth and a sticker. We don't hold children down or use the phrase "be brave". If it isn't happening today, it isn't happening today, and we'll try again in a few months. For complex work in young children we refer to a pediatric specialist.
What if I can't afford the treatment?
Tell us. It changes what we recommend, not whether we'll treat you. There's usually a cheaper option that's clinically sound, and there's almost always a way to stage the work over months. We'd much rather do the urgent part now and the rest in the spring than have you cancel everything out of embarrassment.
Can I just have a cleaning without the full exam?
For your first visit, no. We can't safely clean around problems we haven't looked at, and a hygienist working blind can make things worse. After that, if you're a regular and everything's stable, cleaning-only visits are fine. We're not trying to sell you exams.
Something broke and it's Saturday afternoon.
Call the main number. The voicemail gives an out-of-hours number for genuine emergencies, which means bleeding that won't stop, swelling that's spreading, or a knocked-out adult tooth. A knocked-out tooth is the one true race: keep it in milk or your own saliva, don't scrub it, and get to someone within the hour.

It shouldn't take courage to book a cleaning.

Pick a time that suits you. Come and look around first if you'd rather.
